DANA oasis of resonance
DĀNA, named after the finest natural pearl of the Arabian Gulf, is conceived as a sanctuary of reflection, renewal and resilience. Inspired by the protective geometry of the marine shell and the pearl’s formation under pressure, it transforms adversity into strength.
Terracotta, lime, timber and native planting work with earth, water, shade and wind to create a naturally tempered oasis. At its heart, a pearl-shaped sound sculpture activated by water and touch invites visitors to pause, listen and reconnect. Rooted in biomimicry and regional heritage, DĀNA creates an evolving relationship between architecture, culture and ecology.
The Pearl Drum
Each tuned pad within the Pearl Drum resonates at a different note as water droplets gently strike its surface, creating a slow, evolving soundscape that calms the nervous system.
As the droplets fall into the reflection pool below, expanding ripples cast shimmering light onto the underside of the instrument, creating a continuous dialogue between sound, water and light.
As the pavilion's focal point, the Pearl Drum invites visitors to pause, gather and share a moment of quiet reflection.
Stone Gong (Lithophone)
Positioned at the entrance to the Resonance Chamber, the suspended stone gong invites visitors to become active participants in the sanctuary. Mounted on concealed silicone isolation pads and supported by slender stainless-steel rods anchored into the earthen wall, the stone is free to resonate with deep, imperfect natural tones that celebrate the raw beauty and unpredictability of the material.
Each strike produces a unique harmonic response, creating a moment of mindfulness that gently announces one's arrival into the sanctuary.
Timber Gridshell Structure
The pavilion is formed from a freeform timber ribbed grid shell, where laminated timber ribs and horizontal ring members create a lightweight yet highly efficient shell. This renewable structure supports the ventilated terracotta cladding while providing the strength and stability needed for the doubly curved form.
Biomimicry
Inspired by the geometry of a seashell and the cooling technology of a termite mound, the pavilion uses flowing, organic curves to create a sense of shelter, calm and connection with nature. Its sculpted form also promotes passive cooling by encouraging warm air to rise and escape while drawing cooler air through the lower openings.
Passive Evaporative Cooling
Inspired by the natural cooling of termite mounds, fresh air passes through water-cooled, perforated terracotta walls where evaporation lowers its temperature. The shell acts as a thermal chimney, drawing cool air in at ground level while allowing warm air to rise and escape naturally. A concealed water feed keeps the terracotta cassettes damp, creating a continuous passive cooling cycle.
